Indians, get set to get a pay hike.

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

According to a survey by Hewitt Associates, “salaries in Indonesia and China will also surge by 8.7% and 6.7%, respectively, whereas workers in Japan can expect a paltry 2.1% pay rise”.

On the 22nd of October, Economic Times posted an article on pay hikes in the coming year. Apparently a survey showed that “companies in Asia are set to offer bigger pay rises next year as the region continues to rebound from the global recession’ and that too, ‘notably in India where base salary levels are poised to jump nearly 10%.”

This survey covered over 2,000 local as well as joint venture companies in the Asia-Pacific area. Hewitt said that “salaries — or annual guaranteed pay — this year in Asia’s fast-growing economic powerhouses, China and India, at 4.5% and 6.3%, respectively, were the lowest since 2005.”

“Salaries barely grew at all in Hong Kong and Japan, this year as companies cut staff. More than 60% of companies surveyed in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore froze wage levels, compared with only 26.1% in India and 30.8% in China.”

“Next year, only 6% of companies in India and 8.3% in China expect to freeze pay compared with 12-14% of companies in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.”

So, it looks like it’s just about party time for us in the Indian market! The recession is on its way out and pay hikes will be all the rage in just a few short months. Hold on to your seats! Here comes your salary hike.

Netas the new Hackers

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Cashing in on the easy accessibility of the email, political parties are sending out messages in crores to voters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sent over 3.5 crore emails. The Congress has sent 2.4 crore emails and will send 80 lakh more in each of the four phases of polling left.

“We have a database of around 3.5 crore people to whom we keep sending emails regularly. Whenever there is a big development, we send emails to voters. We plan to reach out to 10 crore voters during the entire campaign through various media, including SMSes. However, we take care that the SMS is not sent to voters who have registered for the ‘Do Not Call,’ service,” said the BJP’s IT campaign incharge Pradyut Vora.

Similar is the strategy being followed by the Congress. The manager of their IT campaign, Vishvjit P Singh, said that they have reached out to voters thrice in the recent weeks through emails. “Around 80 lakh emails were sent every time we wanted to announce something about our party or candidates. The party will send 80 lakh more emails on the eve of the next four phases of elections,” said Singh.

However, none of them revealed the source of their database. “I can’t comment about how we compiled the database. I am not aware of that,” said Vora.

The emails being sent to voters are region, caste and age specific. People of different age groups are receiving different types of emails with text specifically dealing with their issues. The matter in the email varies from region to region as well, proving that the political parties are armed with exact details of voters.

Email service providers Yahoo and Google, when contacted, denied having tied-up with any political party to provide email addresses. “We consider it an intrusion in the privacy of the user. We do not have any policy to share email addresses of our users,” said a Yahoo spokesperson.

While the political parties are tight-lipped, cyber experts said that email IDs are regularly leaked out and are easily available in the grey market.

“Vendors all over the country get details of email addresses by tracing user IPs. And this procedure is not strictly legal as it’s an intrusion of a person’s privacy. It is similar to buying mobile numbers from the grey market to send bulk SMSes,” said a cyber security expert, wishing anonymity.

However, in case of an SMS, the user can register with the “Do Not Call” service and block messages from a particular phone number. But there is no such law in the country to bar unwanted emails. “If we do not want to read these emails we can mark them as spam. Then the email won’t appear in the inbox of the user. But there is no way to stop them from arriving in your mail,” said the expert

Bihar goes the governance way, thrashing the RJD and the Congress

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

For around 2 decades now, Bihar has seemed as the basket case of India, with a low level of development, a crisis of governance, a crippled law and order situation, and the lack of political will to make changes. When Laloo Prasad Yadav came to power, he was like an emergence of the downtrodden castes [...]

Interview : Abhishek Bachchan

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Abhishek Bachchan has just got back to Mumbai. He has been away for a long spell of schedule in Miami of Tarun Mansukhani’s ‘Dostana’. Hereon he goes to resume shooting for Rakeysh Mehra’s ‘Dilli 6’. Abhishek winds up telling what’s more happening in his life – there’s lot, with movies and music holding his concentration at present!

Excerpts from an Interview:

How is the shooting of Dostana going?

It is a young and energetic romantic comedy. It is new kind of genre that I’m trying my hands in. Priyanka, John and I had fun filled time. We were off to Miami for work purpose and it held our concentration most of the time. We balanced fun and also did many hours of hard work.

How did the Cannes schedule go along with Aishwarya?

Like always it was very engaging. Last year Aishwarya and I had gone to Cannes for the first time together. This year the whole family was there. It was a delight to be there with the whole family. Most of the time I’m away from home and to be in some other part of the world with your family is a delight. Also we tried to catch as many films as possible.

Wyclef Jean in Miami did a full hip-hop album with you.

I had a great time recording a song with the super-hip hopper Wyclef Jean in Miami. I had already done a hip-hop song before. Aadesh called me one day and requested me to be a part of the song. Aadesh is a close friend and it was wonderful to finally sing with him. Wyclef is a musician I have admired for a long time and have great respect for him. It was a treat to record with the two of them. And loads of fun. When I was recording with Vishal-Shekhar for Bluff Master I was equally petrified. I love to sing. But I’m not a singer and I have only done this track as a personal favour to Aadesh.

Tell us about your non-film album with Vishal-Shekhar.

It is also a hip-hop album. Dad will also be around as a guest vocalist. The album has been delayed. The album with Vishal -Shekar has been in the making for the last two years and isn’t released. I’d have loved to have premiered it during our World Tour in July. But it’s not ready. When it is ready we’ll release it. Dad has a great singing voice. Mine is nowhere near his. I don’t think I have the ability or talent to do what all he has done.

62

62 – Does this number have any relevance with Modern Indian Politics?

Well, we’ll come back to that later. For now, I’d like to walk you through this blog – what it intends to be and what really prompted its coming into existence.

A portrait of the current US President – Barack Obama. A man who became popular not only in his own country, but the entire world. Of course, that probably had more to do by virtue of the post he was running for, and not his charisma, that images of the man were found everywhere. Newspapers, TV Channels, Web sites, Magazines and even Discussions on the Dining Table, Obama was truly everywhere. Indians were no exception to the rest of the world. We were there reading more about him, wondering what sort of attitude change would come in US-India relations, and just in general, getting to know more about the 2008 US Presidential Elections. Forgive me for camping all of us as Obama supporters, but the Global Electoral College of The Economist (http://www.economist.com/vote2008/) showed us as a strong Obama supporting state, with 87% of the votes going his way.

But with his election and barring a few incidents like naming Hilary Clinton as his Secretary of State, the election mania has died out. But should it really? Should it really go down, when India’s General Elections of 2009 are just around the corner? An election, where its not just 2 people taking part, but in all aspects, anyone and everyone? An election whose result promises to be an absolute whammy – to even the best Indian political analysts.

To give you just a sample, India’s history of anti-incumbency election results seems to cast a pessismistic outlook on the Congress’ chances, the Left withdrawing its support hurts it even more. The BJP suffers from a lack of leadership (Mahajan and Vajpayee) and by making statements such as intending to build the Ram Temple in Ayodhya if elected,it simply alienates its own middle class urban supporters. The case for the Third Front has never been stronger – the dominance of Mayawati’s BSP in UP leads this charge. Throw in your regional medley of political behemoths – the Akali Dal, CPI (M), DMK, AIDMK and you have enough coalition partners to make a million political combinations possible! Quite enough to whet your intellectual appetite.

But lets not get to ahead of ourselves. GE 2009 will undoubtedly covered in this blog, but so will other aspects of Indian politics; the history, the controversies, the growth, the paradigm shifts, the big pictures and even the little details. Not only will stalwarts like Nehru, Indira Gandhi and B R Ambedkar be mentioned, but even the now-slightly-forgotten ones like like VP Menon, Sardar Patel, Jayaprakash Narayan and Kanshi Ram. Its time to relook at history, and study the distance we have travelled as a nation.

Works of ‘India Scholars’ shall be reviewed – Shashi Tharoor, Pratap Mehta, Ashutosh Varshney, Amartya Sen, Sunil Khilnani and the like.

Watching Indians support Obama is a mixed bag. Positive as in the fact, that we do realize that front page news does indeed deserve to make it on the front page – decisions made impact us all. But negative when those same people refuse to have the desire to know more about their own political atmosphere, and realize how domestic elections are much, much more important to them, than who enters the White House.

I look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback. I will try and address a new and different topic, in each bit I write, and hope that by putting all these pieces together, we can all make sense of 21st Century Indian Politics.

Oh and before I forget, 62 is Independant India’s current age. :)
