Kahaani Hindi Movie Trailer – Vidya Balan’s Next Bollywood Film

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Hot off the success of The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan is all set to appear in yet another female-centric role with her next Bollywood movie, Kahaani. If there’s one thing that Vidya seems keen on, it’s bringing variety into the roles she portrays on screen. From a sexy item girl in Dirty Picture, she will now transform into a hapless pregnant wife.

The kahaani of Kahaani

Kahaani is the story of Vidya Bagchi, played by Vidya Balan, who comes from London to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. There are several difficulties which she must face before she can unravel the truth about her spouse. For one, she is 7 months pregnant and absolutely new and alone in the festive city of Kolkata. Absolutely adamant on locating her lost hubby, Vidya begins a ruthless search. That too with only fragments from her memories about him to rely on.

Every clue and lead seem to reach a dead end. Everyone she meets seem oblivious to the whereabouts of her husband and tell her husband does not exist. Slowly, Vidya realises that the waters are deeper than they seem. In a city steeped in lies, Vidya is hell-bent on finding out the truth about her husband, even if it’s for unborn child. And she’s willing to stake her own life.

Vidya Balan in shown as Goddess Kali on the poster of Kahaani

So that’s the kahaani of Kahaani. Seems quite the gripper, this one. Let’s hope the story and screenplay keep us involved enough to forget our boring drab, insipid lives. We’re quite skeptical though for Sujoy Ghosh has few notable films to his credit (Aladin, Home Delivery and Jhankar Beats).

Says Vidya Balan:

“It’s one of the few characters that I could perform with utmost ease and effortlessly because I’d joke with my friends as to how differently women walk when they are pregnant. I also tried to copy the way they take deep breathes in between.”

Superstars of Classic Hindi Cinema – Old Bollywood Stars

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Superstars is an adjective which is rarely attached to new actors in 21st century Bollywood. There are stars and actors and there are prodigies and immensely talented youngsters, but can you name a single actor who can be termed a superstar? Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are perhaps the only current actors who can be called superstars in the true sense of the word.

old bollywood heroes Superstars of Classic Hindi Cinema Old Bollywood Stars

Amitabh and Dharmendra in 'Sholay'

If you’re like me and you like watching old Bollywood movies, I am quite certain that you switch on Set Max or Zee Classic every once in a while to watch reruns of Bollywood movies from 40 years ago. A different sort of feeling rises within – the pace is slower, the dialogues are better, the impact much more powerful. Those are movies from the golden age of Bollywood when superstars such as Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Dharmendra and of course, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan ruled. Popular actresses such as Parveen Babi, Hema Malini and Rekha donned film posters all over India.

Today, these very names are  often remembered with the term ‘superstar’ and there is no reluctance in saying so.

Many of these superstars who ruled then have faded away, some gracefully, some not so gracefully. Most have opted to retire to a life of memories, spending their years in peace and quiet. There are very few who still remain and who have managed to remain a part of the filmy scene.

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan is one of the oldest and most endearing superstars of yesteryears. This phrase is not quite apt for him, since he is a superstar of present times also, but when we recollect the fact that his first film was released over four decades earlier, we realize that he is definitely the most enduring star of all times. Even today he can command his own price and roles which seem to have been written specifically for him.

Hema Malini

Hema Malini can also be counted as one of the most enduring superstars of many decades. She still looks graceful and beautiful, and her acting is flawless as always. Baghban brought her back on the box office stage with a bang and we look forward to many more years of fine performances.
Waheeda Rehman and Sharmila Tagore do not come on the silver screen as often as we would like them to, but that may be due to their own choices in life. But whenever they do star in a film, they shine with an incandescent glow.

Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor is another actor who despite having become nice and round, does a great job as the avuncular uncle or father in the newer films. He carries years of experience and tradition on his shoulders, and his joy in his craft is evident in every role.

Mithun Chakravarty

Mithun Chakravarty, the ultimate Disco Dancer, has become popular as a reality show host. He may no longer be very nimble on his feet, but he still has the grace and the expertise to guide the newer aspirants who would like to step into his dancing shoes.

And some others…

There are many more superstars who we would like to see once again, even though it may be for short scenes or roles. Dev Anand does keep coming back with new flop shows, but he only seems to remind us of the fact that he is no longer a superstar, just a mockery of his old self. Naseeruddin Shah was never a superstar, but he along with Amol Palekar has managed to retain his own niche as a phenomenal character actor. We miss Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz and many others – they were the true superstars and in their heyday they could give any of the new “stars” a run for their money.

11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

I love Bollywood. With all its ups and all its downs, with all the movies, good and bad, I love watching most Hindi movies. Yes, they are corny and cheesy most of the time. Spicy and masaale-daar even. And every other week they tend to insult your intelligence with lame jokes, stories or scenes. But I still love Bollywood movies. They make me smile, give me hope, make me sing and dance and laugh.

why we love bollywood movies 300x135 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Why We Love Bollywood

Why do I dig Bollywood movies?

Bollywood entertains us

Seriously, this is the number once reason why we absolutely love the Hindi film industry. If there’s one common thread that strings together all films that are released in Bollywood, it’s got to be entertainment. Just think where our lives would be if there were no films. We would never get that weekly dose of entertainment in theaters and on television. 6 out of 10 people prefer watching films for passing time and getting entertained. Ever wondered why films made in Bollywood are double the length of Hollywood feature films? I think it’s because there’s hardly any other source of mass entertainment available which manages to entral audiences in the way Bollywood invariably manages to.

2 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

The music

Weddings, parties, radios, gyms, road trips, iPods, mobiles, ring tones, caller tones. All these things would probably be really dry and unhappening if Bollywood didn’t come up with good music, consistently. Music is the soul of Bollywood. It’s what gives Bollywood that singular uniqueness which perhaps no other film industry has. It’s what makes it Indian.

Bollywood music is definitely one of the reasons why I love Bollywood!

The ‘masala’ films

Like our food, our movies are extremely hot and spicy. Yeah, that’s make some of the super-spicy ones Tees Maar Khan difficult to digest. Dialogues, music and action sequences – Producers and directors have a tendency to exaggerate these, make them more entertaining and commercially viable at the same time. They amplify the sound of a slap or a punch to remarkably high levels. More adventurous film makers make fine actors pull out hand pumps and use them as bats to fight a wild mob!

2 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

The women

Even though they are slowly turning away from beauty into sleazy, item girls, one cannot deny that Bollywood is still a bevy of beautiful babes. It’s a male dominated industry and female centric roles are rare. But we all know who the males are dominated by. Sensuous, sexy and super duper hot. Bollywood babes have never been better!

Dialogue-baazi is just too good

One of my personal favorites. I am a sucker for Bollywood dialogues. Even though they have toned down in recent years,  the Indian televisions is replete with old films where you get to hear dramatic comparisons, punch lines and “effects”. In fact, filmy dialogues seem to be making a comeback. Blockbuster masala movies such as Singham and Dabangg had a bunch of them.

Action-baazi is super spicy

Bollywood action movies are a class of their own. Every classic action movie follows the centuries old formula of the typical Bollywood villain who is hideously crafted, the damsel in distress, and the macho dialogue spitting action hero. Yet, we manage to hold on to our seats whenever a Bollywood action film is released. These Bollywood villains seem to be making a comeback. Look at Sanjay Dutt’s bone-chilling avatar in Agneepath.

Some of the stunts in our films are beyond deadly. This one from Singham is an apt example:

2 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Salman Khan, who is on a roll with his commercially successful blockbusters such as Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard, is the current king of Indian masala action movies. Check out this scene from Dabangg when Sallu’s shirt starts ripping off under the weight of his bulging muscles:

2 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Now, that is Bollywood in it’s pure glory!

Unabashed cheating

We copy everything about the firangs. We copy their clothes, their fashion, their choice of music (we all love Hip Hop, Trance, House, Electro and whatnot don’t we?). And we, of course, copy their films. Inside out. Heck, we even rip off their posters once in a while.

zindagi na milegi dobara poster rip off 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara poster ripped from Lords of Dogtown

But we always add our own desi ingredients to it.

Take for example, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. It’s clearly a rip off from the 1998 Robin Williams starrer Patch Adams. In Patch Adams, the protagonist is troubled man who voluntarily commits himself into a mental institution. However, in our version, the crazy creative doctor ain’t some psychotic. He’s a local goonda who’s made his parents believe that he is in fact a reputed doctor running a charitable clinic. When his folks find out, their heart is broken and abandon him. But he vows to become a doctor and have fun at the same time.

The topic of pyaar

We are suckers for love stories and this shows in all Bollywood movies. Comedy, drama, action, fantasy, romance, thriller. The theme of love is woven in Bollywood movies across all genres. Out of the last few good movies that have released in 2011 and now 2012, The Dirty Picture, Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl, Don 2, even Players (it’s good if you compare it with strange movies such as  Lanka, Pappu Can’t Dance Saala, etc) – All of them had a strong love angle in them.

I like about Bollywood films – this pyaar ka factor brings in a lot of cheesy fantasy and optimism in our lives. It gives us hope that even we will fall in love and live happily ever after.

Extremes in stories and impacts

Bollywood doesn’t always come up with masaale-daar films meant to satiate our hunger for entertainment. Filmmakers often come up with hard hitting cinema which totally open our eyes. If we have trashy comedy films such as Housefull and Tees Maar Khan, we also manage to come up with genuine satire such as Peepli [Live] and Phas Gaye Re Obama.

If Salman Khan can manage to churn money with an idiotic Ready, Aamir Khan can better him with mindful movies with moral messages such as 3 Idiots. While we have a song such as Sheila Ki Jawaani which takes the nation by storm and makes people take up dancing lessons, we have a film such as Rang De Basanti which empowers them to rise up to a cause and fight for justice! If more filmmakers had a conscience which wasn’t ruled merely by money and sex, we would have a better country I think. That’s the impact Bollywood films can have on us.

The Bollywood Triumvirate of the Khans

Hollywood has Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio and Tom Cruise. And we have our Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Funny coincidence or what? There are three leading actors in each film industry and all three have been around since the 80s. And they’re still on top of their game. For all the crap of Bollywood, one of these Khans invariably comes up with a film that pulls us right back up. They support charities, dance at marriages, help in sending socially significant messages and do a whole bunch of things which makes a difference to a lot of lives. Isn’t it just (insert powerful adjective here) that we have em?

Selling dreams and fantasy

In a country where millions live on the roads, die of hunger and cold, cannot get 2 square meals a day, how do they still manage to have smiles on their faces?

bollywood dreams 11 Reasons Why I Totally Love Bollywood

Bollywood sells them dreams

I think Bollywood films help all these unfortunate souls get on with their lives with that priceless smile. After a hard day’s work, of fights and arguments, of grabbing and pushing through lines and offices, when they come back home, they have something which puts a bright smile on their tired faces. A simple, cheap medicine which transports them to a totally difference universe, helping them forget all their present worries and problems. Many get drunk and sing and dance to tunes from old Hindi movies. They get a chance to dream and live in a fantasy – even if it’s for three hours.

And that’s why I love Bollywood!

There is something about Bollywood films which Hollywood films lacks. Hollywood is colder, more precise, less flexible and adjusting. Bollywood on the other hand is freeform, very warm and welcoming to change (our doors are always open to foreign actors!). If you prod beneath the surface, you realize that Bollywood films characterize a lot of essential traits of India. It is totally messed up on one hand – noisy, idiotic, senseless, chaotic, sleazy. On the other, it is cheerful, warm, colorful, happy, hopeful.

What do you think? Why do you love/hate Bollywood? Please share with the film community in your comments below. Oh and if you liked reading this piece, do share it with your friends on Facebook. I’d really appreciate it!

Top 10 Most Sizzling Item Numbers of Bollywood

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

malaika munni badnam hui zandu balm 300x201 Top 10 Most Sizzling Item Numbers of BollywoodBollywood, without its infamous item numbers, is considered incomplete by many. The current trend of sexy and raunchy item dance numbers in Bollywood movies, they are surely setting the Box Office ringing. From the 1990’s when songs such as Raveena Tandon’s Tip Tip Barsa Paani was a rage to 2010, when Katrina Kaif shook her fans with her super hot moves in Sheila Ki Jawaani, these scintillating dance numbers have contributed to the success of commercial Bollywood cinema in more than one way. In fact, item songs have become so popular, we actually saw a male actor, Aamir freaking Khan, do an item song in Delhi Belly!

She will again be seen in a super-duper-sexy dance song in the Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt starrer, Agneepath. And this time, she will be Chikni Chameli.

We have compiled a list of the top 10 raunchiest, sexiest and most drooling item numbers of Bollywood – from the 1990s till today.

    1. Sheila Ki Jawani – Tees Maar Khan (2010) From the demure to the sultry sexy siren, Katrina has come a long way. Her jhatkas and thumkas in Farah Khan’s movie is the latest bestseller. We can see Katrina in a never seen avatar before, grooving to the beats of Vishal-Shekhar in perhaps the hottest item song of Bollywood.
    2. Munni Badnam Hui – Dabangg (2010) A brilliantly titillating and raunchy item number picturized on Malaika Arora Khan, the song is a hit with the Indian hinterland population. Sung by Aishwarya Nigam and Mamta Sharma, the song already has a cult following.
    3. Beedi– Omkara (2006) Penned by thelyrical legend Gulzar, this Bipasha Basu item song in Shakespeare’s adaptation stuck the right chord with the audience. The song topped the charts; it was aesthetically brilliant and undoubtedly, gave a boost to Bipasha’s career. Beedi is now a staple of weddings and drunk parties.
    4. Kajra Re– Bunty Aur Babli (2005) Featuring Aishwarya Rai, the dance number was crowned the song of 2005. The song has Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan grooving alongside Aishwarya.
    5. Aisa Jadoo Daala Re – Khakee (2004) A powerful dance performance by Lara Dutta, aisa jadoo dala re was the chartbuster for some weeks. We see Laea Dutta in a new avatar and this song was a much needed break for her. She got visibility in mainstream commercial cinema.
    6. Ishq Samundar– Kaante (2002) Featuring Sanjay Dutt and Isha Koppikar, the entire film was shot in the United with a huge star cast. While on one hand, we have Malaika Arora’s Mahi Ve, Koppikar’s Ishq Samundar was her entry into mainstream cinema. Without the song, she would never have signed some of the projects she does have on hand.
    7. Ishq Kamina– Shakti (2002) Featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, the item number was a glamorous but ‘not so needed’ diversion in the midst of the film’s plot. There is absolutely no basis for the song – Shah Rukh’s dream sequence for the song seems abrupt. Anyways, the song became popular.
    8. Chaiyya Chaiyya – Dil Se (1998) Written by Gulzar, Malaika Arora and Shah Rukh dancing on the train was a diversion from the usual item numbers before 1998. The confidence and elegance of the performance is wonderful. The song received several awards and was recently played in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, in New Delhi.
    9. Tip Tip Barsa Paani – Mohra (1994) A sexy and raunchy item number, with the dhak-dhak girl Raveena Tandon and the khiladi hero Akshay Kumar grooving to tip tip barsa paani, it is a typical Bollywood rain dance number.
    10. Choli Ke Peeche – Khalnayak (1993) The original dhak-dhak girl of Bollywood, Madhuri Dixit is the dance Goddess. With well defined expressions, perfect moves, and oodles of sensuality, the choli ke peeche was a super-duper hit.

m4 Top 10 Most Sizzling Item Numbers of Bollywood

I often wonder what is it that an ‘item’ number has that makes or breaks a movie in Bollywood and I have mostly reached only one conclusion – the skin. As a famous director puts it crassly:

Jitna badan dikhaoge, utni pichhar hit ho jayegi

Yep, that’s sadly the cold hard truth. Many actresses often enter Bollywood in a movie which is ‘hot’ or shows the actress in a very poor light. An example? The famous Katrina Kaif. She entered Bollywood in 2003 with a movie (true to its name) that boomed at the box office. Unfortunately, Katrina failed to learn from her mistakes and repeated the fiasco in 2010′s Tees Maar Khan. Read the Tees Maar Khan movie review and see the item number which defined the movie.

Anyway. That’s enough analysis for now. What do you think? Which is your favorite item number? Please vote/comment below to let us know!

Most Philanthropic Bollywood stars

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Today I was seized by this overwhelming desire to give, and like most people I took full five minutes to ponder on what to do for the general good.  Then, I moved on, and carried on with my daily routine.

Is it so hard to give away? Does our spirit to help others financially or morally depend on how much we earn? Probably not. Money, as they say is immaterial.

Some of our biggest stars are known to be miserly donors while some others lesser know ones are actively involved in charity and volunteer for charity fundraisers or events. But thankfully, there some extremely philanthropic Bollywood stars.

Our most philanthropic Bollywood stars

Akshay Kumar: Akshay Kumar undoubtedly does several movies a year. In fact, with him taking on TV shows’ hosting too, he must be hard pressed for time. Also to be noted is the fact that he is one actor who is known as the lowest paid actor among his top-rung peers.  Considering all this, it is amazing that he regularly finds time for charity. Only recently, he donated a huge sum of 50 lakhs to ‘Being Human’, the charity organization run and supported by Salman Khan.

salman khan being human actress walk ramp 300x200 Most Philanthropic Bollywood stars

Salman Khan and co-actresses on a rampwalk

Salman Khan: He can easily be called the king of all Bollywood philanthropists. Of the several charities he supports, Salman is very actively involved with his organization ‘Being Human’.

The NGO ‘Being Human’ raises its funds mainly by selling Being Human T-shirts (like the one Salman has been seen sporting almost always nowadays), watches, accessories and his original paintings. Recently, he organized a charity event where several celebs walked the ramp at the India Couture Week (Mumbai); the proceeds of this event went to ‘Being Human’.

Apart from his huge involvement with ‘Being Human’, he is also closely associated with several other organizations. Cancer Patients Aid Association is one such organization. Salman is known to often visit their functions and interact lovingly with children. An example of Salman’s large heartedness is the case when he visited one of CPAA’s programme for terminally ill patients, with his entire family. They met each and every patient and humbly donated 13 lakh rupees before leaving.

Not only does Salman Khan spend his time and money with other people who are in need, he also expressed the desire to donate bone marrow soon after he came to know that bone marrow can help save cancer patients. He could be dissuaded only with lots of explanation on how the operation was a lot more complex than he could have anticipated and bone marrows could be transplanted only to patients whose tissues were a match with the donor.  Make-A-Wish Foundation of India is another organization who has often called upon Salman in times of need. Ashray, which helps AIDS infected women and children is also an organization which gets regular monetary and moral support from Salman. He often visits the children and spends several priceless hours with them, thus spreading joy in the lives of terminally ill patients.

What does Salman Khan get out of doing so much good some cynics might ask? Well, all of his movies which were released in 2011 grossed more than 100+ crores each at the Bollywood box office. How bout that!?!

Shahrukh Khan: Shahrukh Khan is said to be closely involved with the NGO, Make-a-wish. Whenever he is approached for help, the King Khan is ready to help. These wishes are made by terminally ill children and many a times when they wish to meet SRK, he arranges for them to be driven to his house and spends quality time with them.

Shahrukh is known to be a generous star and a considerate employer. How he helped the family of the onlooker who died in a freak accident on the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, is no secret. Though he was not legally obliged to do this, he did it out of compassion and a sense of moral duty. On occasions when his banner’s movies have been huge hits, he has shared the profits with the employees in the form of goodwill bonus. The employees of his company Red Chillies Entertainment can’t stop talking of the love and respect SRK treats them with. It is also a known fact that Shahrukh Khan has founded the Department for Childern with cancer in Nanavati Hospital (Mumbai).

Vidya Balan: This dusky-eyed actress is closely associated with AmFar (Americans for AIDS Research) and also gives monetary support to Hale House, home to children born with HIV and children addicted to drugs. Apart from the money and time she spends with the above mentioned institutions, she also finds time to host forums and participate in events which help in aid and research for the Harvard AIDS Institute.

Vivek Oberoi: He is known to be very actively involved with charity. Be it the Tsunami hit villages or the cause of the girl child he is always there for them. Vivek Oberoi celebrated his 33rd birthday (2009) with the children in an orphanage. Vivek and Sushmita were spotted at the project Devi charity event recently. Not only that, he also went over to Sri Lanka recently and aided the families of ex-LTTE members.

aamir for education 300x199 Most Philanthropic Bollywood stars

aamir for education

Amitabh Bachchan is often criticized for being rather miserly in terms of give-away charity, but he does his bit in his own way. Not only has he opened schools for little girls in his home-villages in UP, he was also seen auctioning a lunch date. The Joy of Giving, a Bangalore based NGO, which works towards creating an awareness about children’s civil rights, organized.

Sushmita Sen and Raveena Tandon are both very actively involved with welfare projects. Their favorite projects are aimed at helping the girl child and underprivileged and orphaned children.

Aamir Khan is also an actor who is known to spend money and time in order to help others out.  However, it seems he keeps the efforts under wraps; hardly does one find any one mention in the news of internet.

How amazing it is that several of these Bollywood stars’ interviews and love-life get ample coverage by the press, but their good acts are seldom reported. These stars shine bright and their light gets reflected by several troubled lives all over the world.
