Players Movie Review

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Remake of the American cult film ‘ The Italian Job’, Players is about a master thief (Abhishek Bachchan) with a childhood friend (Aftab Shivdasani), their teacher (Vinod Khanna) and his righteous daughter (Sonam Kapoor). Abhishek wants to fulfill Vinod Khanna’s dream of building an orphanage which will absolve him of his sins as a thief. So he puts together a team of “Players” – a Magician with a tragic past (Bobby Deol), a partially deaf weapon’s expert (Sikander Kher), a seductress who apparently also knows how to build train engines (Bipasha Basu), a ‘hungry for appreciation’ make up artist (Omi Vaidya) and a sadistic computer hacker (Neil Nitin Mukesh).

players movie review 2012 Players Movie Review

Players – A sad, sad movie.

The childhood friend sacrifices his life to pass on information about Rs. 10,000 crores worth of gold, which is later published in national newspapers anyway. The crew comes together, carries out the theft, hacker turns rogue, tries to kill the crew, doesn’t succeed, gets hunted down, the double crosses come to light, the righteous daughter avenges her father’s death and they live happily ever after. All this happens, in SUPER SLOW MOTION.

Abhishek and Bipasha still have the Dhoom 2 hangover, Omi Vaidya is funny, Neil and Sikander do justice to their roles, whereas Bobby and Sonam are dull. Music is average and hardly lingers.

Players Movie Review

Players is unintentionally funny. Needless to say, there are some scenes in the movie that leave you bewildered, but definitely not asking for more.

  • A gold heist in Russia is planned and carried out by a few Indians with remarkable ease while the super powerful Russian Mafia knows and does nothing about it. Subsequently, all the loot reaches New Zealand and authorities or the mafia doesn’t seem to know of it!
  • It takes only 10 minutes to steal Rs. 10,000 crore worth of gold in the form of solid bricks from a super fast moving train. Seriously?
  • Johnny Lever builds three car bodies out of ‘real gold’ in a matter of few hours!
  • Abhishek Bachchan can stroll in the jails as if they are his own gardens! And he can singlehandedly blast through a high-tech security system in a van.

I think I should not give away any more surprises that ‘Players’ holds in store for you. Sonam, please pick better films. Mausam was a bigger dud! We know you can. Abbas-Mustan – you guys should consider retirement instead of ripping of Hollywood films mindlessly.

Kahaani Hindi Movie Trailer – Vidya Balan’s Next Bollywood Film

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Hot off the success of The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan is all set to appear in yet another female-centric role with her next Bollywood movie, Kahaani. If there’s one thing that Vidya seems keen on, it’s bringing variety into the roles she portrays on screen. From a sexy item girl in Dirty Picture, she will now transform into a hapless pregnant wife.

The kahaani of Kahaani

Kahaani is the story of Vidya Bagchi, played by Vidya Balan, who comes from London to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. There are several difficulties which she must face before she can unravel the truth about her spouse. For one, she is 7 months pregnant and absolutely new and alone in the festive city of Kolkata. Absolutely adamant on locating her lost hubby, Vidya begins a ruthless search. That too with only fragments from her memories about him to rely on.

Every clue and lead seem to reach a dead end. Everyone she meets seem oblivious to the whereabouts of her husband and tell her husband does not exist. Slowly, Vidya realises that the waters are deeper than they seem. In a city steeped in lies, Vidya is hell-bent on finding out the truth about her husband, even if it’s for unborn child. And she’s willing to stake her own life.

Vidya Balan in shown as Goddess Kali on the poster of Kahaani

So that’s the kahaani of Kahaani. Seems quite the gripper, this one. Let’s hope the story and screenplay keep us involved enough to forget our boring drab, insipid lives. We’re quite skeptical though for Sujoy Ghosh has few notable films to his credit (Aladin, Home Delivery and Jhankar Beats).

Says Vidya Balan:

“It’s one of the few characters that I could perform with utmost ease and effortlessly because I’d joke with my friends as to how differently women walk when they are pregnant. I also tried to copy the way they take deep breathes in between.”

Agneepath Movie Review – Deadly, Illogical and packed with Bollywoodism

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

I went to the theatres the other day to catch the Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt starrer, Agneepath. The movie was meant to be pure masala fare meant to keep one thrilled for a good three hours. The expectations were quite high because of Agneepath’s trailer and accomplished actors such as Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt starring in it. Unfortunately, it failed to keep me gripped for the plot was loose with several illogical gaps and it was just too much Bollywoodism packed in for one film.

Synopsis

Based on Mukul Anand’s original cult film, the plot of Agneepath is quite simple. It’s belongs to the good old fight-for-right and avenge-with-revenge type of Bollywood films.

Agneepath is the story of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) who is out on a mission against, Kancha (Sanjay Dutt), the bald, evil looking villain to avenge his father’s (Master Deenanath played by Chetan Pandit) death in the village of Mandwa.

agneepath star cast Agneepath Movie Review Deadly, Illogical and packed with Bollywoodism

Agneepath star cast

After his father is wrongfully murdered by Kancha, young Vijay (Arish Bhiwandiwala) along with his mum Suhasini Chauhan (Zareena Wahaab) go away to Bombay. There he rises from a little kid to a little gangster under Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor), the leader of Bombay’s underworld.

Kali (Priyanka Chopra) is his only friend who is pining away for his love. Inspector Gaitonde (Om Puri) is the long arm of justice who understands Vijay and wants to help him.

Where Agneepath Failed

A plot based on fighting for righteousness and vengeance is a hackneyed story line for Bollywood films. But in the original Agneepath, Kader Khan’s superbly written dialogues and Amitabh Bachchan’s delivery of them managed to create a powerful impression. It had eventually turned out to be one of Amitabh Bachchan’s most epic performances.

Cut to 2012, when debut director Karan Malhotra and producer Karan Johar decide to rip off  remake a cult classic by shredding the original screenplay to bits and adding masala to suit the taste of the new generation. They only thing epic about the new Agneepath will probably be Sanjay Dutt’s style and performance.

If you go watch Agneepath, be prepared to see Hrithik kill a whole gang of villains armed with automatic machine guns with a single revolver and later, dying in the arms of his mother with cheesy Bollywoody dialogues spilling off his tongue. Some find this stuff good but for some, it can get too ludicrous to digest.

They have gone too far to make the new Agneepath a crowd puller. There really was no need for ear blasting background scores or irreverent action scenes.

A Few Good Points

Cinematography.

Some of the visuals in the movie are beautifully painted on the screen, giving Agneepath a surrealist tinge to it. Color and depth seem to have has been meticulously worked up in almost every single frame. Kudos to Sabu Cyril and Kiran Deohans for such stunning visuals.

Sanjay Dutt – The Best Bollywood Villain in recent years

sanjay dutt in agneepath 280x300 Agneepath Movie Review Deadly, Illogical and packed with Bollywoodism

Sanjay Dutt in as Kancha in Agneepath

The most noteworthy and original element of Agneepath is Sanjay Dutt’s role of Kancha which had originally been played by  Danny Dezongpa. Bollywood villains have often entertained audiences more than the heroes. In The new Kancha is looks disturbingly evil and is a thousand times meaner. This is one of his best performances after Munnabhai and I’m quite sure he will take away many awards for the role.

Conclusion – Lots of noise, little substance

Agneepath has all the characteristics of a Bollywood film which usually make us love Bollywood. It has conflict, it has souped up drama and emotion, unbelievable action scenes, a much talked about Chikni Chameli, powerful dialogue, a hero, heroine and villain.

But it just somehow doesn’t make the cut for a blockbuster. It will probably make 70-80 crores at the Bollywood box office and push off into the archives without making that impact which we thought it would make.

Watch it for Sanjay Dutt and his constant reminder from the Bhagavad Gita:

Tum Kya Laye Thay, Tum Kya Leke Jaoge

Talaash Movie Trailer – Will it be a hit or a flop?

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Talaash is the name of Aamir Khan’s next Bollywood movie. Written and directed by Reema Kagti, Talaash also stars Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor. It’s a suspense thriller where Aamir plays the role of a cop called Surjan Singh Sekhawat. Deadly!

talaash Talaash Movie Trailer Will it be a hit or a flop?

Talaash – The Answer Lies Within

Talaash might just thrill your brains out. Let’s hope it does – the last decent Bollywood thriller that we saw was I don’t know, 7 Khoon Maaf? Even that was okayish only.

But the director is just one film old!

Reema Kagti debuted as a director with Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd which was a quirky romantic comedy. The film bombed. She next co-wrote Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara with Zoya Akhtar, which did pretty well. And Reema has assisted talented directors such as Farhan Akhtar, Mira Nair and Ashutosh Gowarikar. Some say she’s just one film old, so the hype is uncalled for. But that is all bullshit. Let me give you three solid examples from Bollywood history:

  1. Ashutosh Gowarikar was just two films old (Pehla Nasha and Baazi – both bombed) before he came together with Aamir Khan and directed Lagaan. The film almost won an Oscar.
  2. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra had Aks to his name when Aamir signed up for Rang De Basanti. And that was a time when two Bhagat Singh movies were being released every weekend.  The film earned more than Rs. 1.36 billion (approximately US million) worldwide.
  3. And Farhan Akhtar had never made a movie before he made Dil Chahta Hai. And this film is widely recognized as the epic of our generation.
This is why I have high hopes with Talaash too.

Trailer of Talaash

From the 1 min long teaser, you can make out that Talaash is going to be a suspense thriller of the highest order. There will be blood. There will be dialogue. Action. Masala. Almost everything that we love Bollywood for. And there will be Aamir Khan. With his stamp of approval, everything seems fine. We somehow believe that the film will be really good.

I cannot remember the last time I came across any Bollywood (or even Hollywood!) celebrity who had consistently delivered good films like this guy. So without further ado, here’s the trailer of Talaash:

Talaash – We’re anticipating something really solid!

Talaash is going right on top of the list of the most highly anticipated upcoming Hindi movies to be released in 2012. Yes, the expectations are so high. The trailer is so good. I am an Aamir Khan fan. Not because all his films tend to work exceptionally well but because he’s one of the few actors who believes in creativity and improvisation.

In the last 10 years, Aamir has really experimented with the kind of roles that he has picked (village hero, romantic hero, historical hero, revolutionary hero, undercover terrorist, art teacher, crazy killer with six packsstudentpainter). But never before has he played a suspense drama. Surprised right? He’s been in a number of commercial action films but never a suspense thriller.

Read more about why Aamir Khan’s movies are invariably so successful.

What do you think? Will Talaash be a hit or a flop? Do share your thoughts in the comments below!

Don 2 – Movie Review

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

In a way, the tagline is apt. The king really is back. And not because Don 2 is one of those tremendous, amazing, mind-blowing films that one cannot miss. It’s just that… finally, SRK has not acted in a bad film.  A few of his last films, especially My Name Is Khan and RA.One (Pathetic!), have been really below the standards that are associated with the brand name ‘SRK’. Therefore what I honestly think is that people are finally relieved to watch him act well, and actually deliver a film that’s not boring, or pathetic, or senseless, or overdone, or any of those words that are supposed to signify negativity in the film world.

Don 2 Movie Review

85499 boman irani and farhan akhtar at ambani big pictures bash at gra1 300x225 Don 2 Movie Review

Don 2 starts with a brilliant action sequence that’s not artificial, or “fake” – it made many people in the cinema gasp, including me. My point: it’s really classy. The flow carries on and not at a single point does it seem that Don 2 is going to lose the plot, or it’s going to derail itself. In fact, till the intermission, it’s almost perfect.

When it really goes wrong is in the second half of the second half. When it seems like the movie is supposed to rest, and end, it seems to take on a totally different route. And that’s wrong. Because you can’t deny that even as an average viewer, you can feel when the movie is supposed to end. You can start feeling the frustration and the irritation when the plot stretches itself beyond a certain limit. And it’s not that Don 2 becomes boring, it just becomes slightly irritating.

But that’s ok. Shahrukh Khan films usually have an overdone second half.  They work sometimes, like it does in Don 2 but mostly, they go horribly wrong.

Performances in Don 2

shahrukhkhan don2 300x225 Don 2 Movie Review Hats off to two people: first, SRK himself.

Shahrukh, because he has given the avatar of Don a classy look. His style is brilliant, his dialogues are fuelled with the right amount of sarcasm and attitude. His walking style is slightly, um, slightly too much, but still nice to watch. His style of smoking and his choice of shades are both fitting. In short, Don mast hai bhai.

The second actor who’s performance is worthy of applause is Boman Irani. I loved his acting. The guy is a powerhouse of talent!

Priyanka has done well too, though she’s performed better in other films. Although I hate to say this considering I am talking about an industry veteran, but Om Puri has acted way below his skills. Only a few will disagree.

Direction

The direction, well, Farhan knows his job. Again, I’m slightly critical about the flow in the latter half of the movie after the interval, but let’s look beyond that. A special mention to the script writers because Don’s one-liners are superbly funny and classy.

Music

Composed by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy, I didn’t dig the music of Don 2 as much as I dug those of Don. Zara Dil Ko Thaam Lo is one of the decent tracks.

So, as always, the final verdict. Should you go for Don 2? Yes, you totally should!

Watch it for Don’s impeccable style, watch it for SRK’s much needed comeback. Watch it for Farhan Akhtar. Watch it for the sexy Priyanka Chopra. Watch it for Irani’s performance. Watch it because it’s Don, the closest Bollywood has gotten to Hollywood-style action films (don’t criticize me for comparing! We can’t deny Hollywood is a class apart).

I’d give it a 6½  out of 10, only because the second half feels too long. Otherwise, if you’re ready to ignore that, I’d give it a solid 7½.

An Observation

Did you notice that when compared to RA.One, SRK hardly did any real promotion for Don 2? It’s possibly a sign of his smartness. Perhaps, just perhaps, he knew what a piece of crap RA.One was. Perhaps, that’s why he knew how hard he needed to work in order to get his money back! On the other hand, he was pretty confident that Don 2 would carry itself forward on its own… and thus, there were no real headline material regarding SRK breaking the ground to promote his hot avatar!

The Dirty Picture Movie Preview – Vidya Balan the Dirty Seductress!

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Vidya Balan as Silk Smitha in Dirty Picture The Dirty Picture Movie Preview – Vidya Balan the Dirty Seductress!

Vidya Balan as Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture

The Dirty Picture – Vidya Balan’s latest Bollywood film has shown us stills of her in super sexy outfits, with no pretenses about being a demure and decorous female. Vidya Balan is oozing sensuality, and her “I couldn’t care less” attitude is evident in every image. This is in sharp contrast to our earlier perceptions about Vidya – the coy next door lady, traditional and decorous in most of her dealings.

Vidya Balan plays a sexy siren in The Dirty Picture – when did that happen?

Ishqiya showed Vidya at her raunchiest best and it seems her performance in The Dirty Picture will be a notch higher in this genre of films. All set to release on 2nd December, The Dirty Picture is getting rave reviews for it’s catchy songs and controversial characters. Vidya Balan is playing the role of a South Indian item girl based on the life and times of real life South Indian actor Smithaa, popularly known as “Silk Smita”. Read more about The Dirty Picture.

Story

Originally we believed that this was to be a biopic based on the life of the beleaguered Andhra Pradesh starlet Silk Smitha, who committed suicide in 1996. However, the producers, after a law-suit from Smitha’s brother, have clarified that it is the “romantic journey of a fiercely ambitious starlet who dreams of making it big on the silver screen”.  The film is set in the 1980s, and is centred on Mumbai’s highly competitive movie industry, and the emotional turmoil in the lives of all those who step into this arena.

Cast

Vidya Balan is the main performer in the film. She has conquered the niche of female oriented roles and there are few actresses who can match her prowess in this field. She makes erotica look tame while flaunting her voluptuousness, and yet she manages to evade the tag of vulgarity. Naseeruddin Shah is her co-star again, and she has the eternal kisser Emraan Hashmi  and Tushaar Kapoor as her romantic counterparts.

Music

The music for this film was composed by Vishal-Shekhar and the lyrics were written by Rajat Aroraa. So far it has not really taken the country by storm, though the song Ooh La La, with a 80s rhythm to it, has been on the best-seller charts for some time. The fact that Bappi Lahiri is the singer should give you a good idea of what the song is all about.

Perception

The loneliness of a young starlet’s life in the 1980s was something that never got mentioned in the gossip columns. They only paid attention to her cleavage and her innumerable liaisons, ignoring the difficult lives they led. If Milan Luthria has directed Vidya Balan well enough to reach the heights of her histrionic talents, then this will be a film to watch, not just for it’s titillation factor but also because it will be a tale well-told.

Will The Dirty Picture hit it?

What with Vidya Balan romancing Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi, The Dirty Picture will definitely make movie buffs go Ooh La La. Surprisingly, there are still some people who can not bear the apparent sleaziness being publicized.  The Pakistan Censor Board has actually banned the film in their country! And they said Urdu could make us more romantic…sigh! Let’s hope better sense prevails and they allow art to be shown as what it actually is – art.

dirty picture poster The Dirty Picture Movie Preview – Vidya Balan the Dirty Seductress!

The Dirty Picture poster

As for reactions from other celebrities about The Dirty Picture, Bollywood is abuzz. Everyone has high expectations with the movie. In fact Karan Johar tweeted:

“Her performance in The Dirty Picture is by far the bravest and best performance I have seen of any actor in years, she is the benchmark.”

Emraan Hashmi is on another level altogether. Here’s what he has to say about his acting career, with a film like Dirty Picture under his belt:

“I have contaminated the film industry. If not I, then someone else would have done those bold acts. Cinema has to evolve, I was the face of something that was bold, that raised eyebrows. Some of the cultural dictators of the film industry said what he (Emraan) has done, this is not Bollywood, what kind of films are these, this is not our culture.”

Let’s hope all the hype abut The Dirty Picture lives up and we get to see some raunchy cinema in mainstream Bollywood!

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Movie Preview – Is it a Remake of ‘What Happens in Vegas’?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011
ek main aur ek tu movie wallpaper Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Movie Preview Is it a Remake of What Happens in Vegas?

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Poster

I recently caught the first look of Imraan Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. The movie seems to be based on yet another quirky romance story. Girl meet Boy,  both get drunk and marry. Regret the decision. Spend some time together during the annulment and boom! They fall in love. Watch the trailer, that’s probably what you’ll decide. Actually, it seems like a remake of the Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher starrer, What Happens in Vegas though the filmmakers are obviously denying that.

Let’s hope Karan Johar and Shakun Batra have better sense than to mindlessly copy films from America. Indian filmmakers have a notorious reputation for lifting films, sometimes blatantly translating the dialogues as well.

Anyway.

Here’s

More scoop on Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu:

Plot

Rahul Kapoor (played by Imraan Khan) is an unemployed architect who happens to meet Riana Braganza (played by Kareena Kapoor) on Christmas Eve. They get drunk and next thing ya know, they’re married (rings a bell?). They want to get the marriage annuled now and while they wait, few interesting things happen. They hang about here and there, romance a little every now and then…which eventually leads us to the climax – Do they fall in love?

Cast

  1. Imran Khan as Rahul Kapoor
  2. Kareena Kapoor as Riana Braganza
  3. Randhir Kapoor
  4. Boman Irani
  5. Ram Kapoor
  6. Ratna Pathak Shah
  7. Rajat Barmecha

Crew

  1. Producers: Karan Johar, Ronnie Screwvala, Hiroo Johar
  2. Executive Producer / Co-Producer: Marijke Dsouza, Apoorva Mehta
  3. Director: Shakun Batra
  4. Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya
  5. Music Director: Amit Trivedi
  6. Cinematography: David Macdonald
  7. Choreography: Bosco Martis, Rajiv Surti
  8. Costumes: Manish Malhotra, Shiraz Siddiqui, Gopika Malkan

According to an article, the Imran Khan’s character in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has been inspired by his real life marriage.

Guessing by KJo’s tryst with romcoms, I can wager a 500 ka note that all will go well with the movie. It will contain a few genuine laughs that you and me will be able to over some popcorn, some nice music by Amit Trivedi hopefully and loads of drama. Light hearted, funny and predictable. And commercially, it might make the cast and crew richer by a few crores.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Trailer

There, that was the trailer of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. Sweet na? Kareena Kapoor sure is looking hot!

I’m sure though, the movie will not make any difference to Indian society in any possible way. Random thought to be put inside a post about a movie providing entertainment but I have this habit of looking for meaning behind everything.

That’s all for now. What do you think? What kind of a movie will Will Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu turn out to be? Like Anjaana Anjaani or a more believable, genuinely humourous film? Let us know your thoughts through your comments below!

Rockstar is the story of Janardhan Jakhar (played by Ranbir Kapoor) and his evolution into Jordan. It’s also the story of his love affair with Heer, the college bomb. Janardhan is a rebellious, stubborn, typical middle class delhiite who is passionately fond of making music on his six string. A fan of American Rock icon Jim Morrison, Janardhan wants to be a rockstar and show the finger like Morrison did in the 60s.

Anyway, as is usual in our society when we come across someone with dreams larger than a mediocre job, Janardhan is mocked by friends and family alike. They think he cannot be a rockstar. His mentor is the college canteenwala, Khatana Singh (played by Kumud Mishra gives his simple, insightful advice which takes the movie forward -

Sangeet toote hue dil se niklata hai.

He tells Janardhan that all rockstars, artistic people have one thing which links their lives – pain. They have gone through soul wrenching tragedies to come out fighting with their music and creativity.

This inspires Janardhan, the simpleton, to woo Heer Kaul (played by Nargis Fakhri), the hottest most unnattainable babe on the campus. What starts as a simple friendship soon leads to an intense love affair. All-consuming, burning, agonizing and passionate, this affair transforms Janardhan, the simpleton, into Jordan, the Rockstar.

This is essentially what Rockstar is all about.

The Bad

Rockstar Movie Review

Here is my humble movie review of Rockstar. Please note -  I’m no film/music genius and have no right to criticize Mr. Ali’s filmmaking, Mrs. Fakhri’s acting or Mr. Rahman’s music, but this is just my opinion as a general movie buff.

ranbir kapoor in rockstar Rockstar Movie Review A Palangtod Mix of Passion, Music and Epicness

Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar

The Good

Direction, writing and cinematography

Rockstar has been brilliantly shot. Every scene is rich with colours and emotions. A myriad of them – passion, love, hate, red, yellow, blue, ridicule, rebellion, blue, green, creativity, anger, desire and ego have been added to the mix by the talented Imtiaz Ali. He’s known for giving the usual love stories his creative twist and Rockstar is another love affair, this time with rock and Nargis Fakhri who looks heavenly (IMO a mix of Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif).

In Rockstar, Imtiaz Ali depicts the “dichotomy of fame”. He shows how Jordan, in spite of his success still yearns and burns for Heer.

Ranbir Kapoor as Janardhan/Jordan

Ranbir Kapoor has effortlessly acted out his difficult two sided character in Rockstar, keeping all the emotions intact. The truth and intensity with which Ranbir comes alive as Janardhan Jakhar urf Jordan is mind blowing. In spite of Nargis Fakhri’s bad acting, Rockstar seems believable all because of Ranbir Kapoor. When he is Janardhan, he is irreverent, passionate, funny, animated and naive. When he becomes Jordan, he is dark, emotional, intense, unpredictable. And plays both parts with precision, emotion and skill. Add to this the voice of Mohit Chauhan, and you get a superb, almost iconic, rockstar.

ranbir kapoor rockstar 2011 Rockstar Movie Review A Palangtod Mix of Passion, Music and Epicness

Sadda Haq, Aithe Rakh!

Music

Apart from Ranbir Kapoor’s potrayal of Jordan, some of the music in Rockstar is absolutely brilliant. I say some because I can’t remember any other song right now apart from Sadda Haq and Katiya Karun and perhaps Kun Faaya Kun. A.R Rahman has done an excellent job of composing the music and it does make Rockstar all the more credible (something that was missing in London Dreams). He has managed to show the emotional and creative journey of Janardhan from Nizamuddin Dargah to the international music scene quite accurately.

But something was still missing. Maybe the lyrics weren’t listener friendly (WTF is Katiya Karun or Kun Faaya Kun?) and didn’t go well with the music or he’s mixed up his riffs and arpeggios. Or perhaps, like most other A.R Rahman albums, the music has to still grow on me.

The classic hawaldar topi on a rockstar.

Costumes

Manish M and Aki N have designed some really cool clothes for both Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri. In fact, they have nailed down the part of dressing Ranbir Kapoor as a convincing rockstar.

The Bad

Nargis Fakhri as Heer Kaul

Nargis Fakhri plays the role of a hifi, neat and clean college going girl about to get married. Beautiful, talented and rich, Heer has broken many hearts and Janardhan wants to get his heart broken too so that he can come up with nice music. On the surface, she’s pretty decent but inside, she’s wild adventurous and sassy. And man, her acting  sucks. I kept wishing that there was some other actor playing her role for that would have made Rockstar much more enjoyable.

Nargis Fargis.

Agreed that she looks stunningly hot (I was literally staring at her in some of the scenes), it was darn irritating to see her bad acting. The passion and skill with which Ranbir Kapoor has done his part is missing in Nargis Fakhri. Yeah, she’s a newcomer and all that but she should urgently get some acting classes if she wants to make it big in Bollywood. Even her voice has been dubbed badly.

The Ugly

Screenplay and Editing

Rockstar starts on a high note and reaches its zenith at the interval. However after you’ve bought your popcorns and Pepsis during the interval, and cozily sat down to watch the remainder of the epic saga, don’t expect much. The built up emotions within you will slowly fizzle out. Post interval, Rockstar is chaotic, messy and badly edited. There are several unexplained scenes and sequences and you’re often wondering what the heck is happening. Jordan’s clashes with the police and being sent to jail for silly reasons, the romantic sequence in Prague, the unclear self-destructive phase.

Intense.

The Climax

The ugliest thing about Rockstar is the open ended climax. I am a sucker for happy endings. Some people like tragedies. Rockstar has a tragic end but lacks in finality – we’re left confused as to what finally happened. This was a bad move for Rockstar’s commercial success at the box office where happy endings means a ton of moolah.

Conclusion

Ranbir, you’ve rocked to the core in Rockstar. You have left behind all your contemporaries with Jordan. You literally carry the film with your style and intensity. You’ve pulled off Jordan’s life so convincingly that we almost forget it is Ranbir Kapoor. Your acting is rare, heavy and filled with awesome. I hope you do more roles like this!

Imtiaz, I was expecting much more than this. Still, not bad. The story was frikin awesome. You’ve really extracted a fine performance from your whole team especially Ranbir. But please pay more attention to the screenplay and choice of female leads in your next film. Go for skills rather than just beauty.

Nargis, please take lots of acting classes. You dance well, you’ve got a rosy face and you’re hot. But you need to work very hard if you want to stay and make a name in Bollywood without sleeping around with cheap directors and agents.

Mr. Rahman, what can I say. You made our day. We won’t have to listen to trashy songs for a while now.

Aarti Bajaj, you edited some bombshell movies like Dev D, No Smoking, Jab We Met, Gulaal and whatnot. We expected much more than this. Please meditate a little bit, it will bring some clarity to your work.

All in all, Rockstar is a palangtod mix of passion, music and desire.

Phew!
