Movie Review: Shaitan

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

You know, there’s a Shaitan poster at intervals of 200-300 meters on every main Bombay street. I think the amount of publicity they’ve tried to do for this movie before its release is just plain stupid, because this movie is so freakin’ awesome, that I don’t think they even needed to make so many big posters to create hype! One trailer was good enough to generate excitement in all of us! Or at least, in a die-hard film fanatic like me. [ rel="nofollow" title="Shaitan latest hindi movie" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PYV3VH4xUM" target="_blank">Watch the official Shaitan Trailer]

Oh yes, number one: the awesome, super-stylish trailer. Two, the name itself. And three… the taglines: Face Your Inner Shaitan. Oh and did I fail to mention a four! The name of Anurag Kashyap to top it all. This could not have been a failure under any circumstance at all. Any.

Great it was expected to be and great it has turned out to be. People were, I was, expecting it to be some self-questioning psychological thriller that blows your mind off. Blow the mind off it does, sort of, but with a much simpler story.

id="attachment_4952" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 522px"> href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/shaitan-hit-or-flop.jpg"> class="size-full wp-image-4952" title="shaitan hit or flop" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/shaitan-hit-or-flop.jpg" alt="shaitan hit or flop Movie Review: Shaitan" width="512" height="351" /> class="wp-caption-text">Shaitan – There's a devil inside everyone of us

Shaitan – Synopsis

This film is basically about the crazy life of five super crazy friends who like living life on the edge like complete maniacs. The movie introduces 5 friends – Amrita/ Amy (Kalki Koechlin), Dushyant/ Dash (Shiv Pandit), Zubin (Neil Bhoopalam), Karan/ KC (Gulshan Devaiya) and Tanya Sharma (Kirti Kulhari). Coming from rich families (apart from Tanya and Dash), these kids do the usual stuff which rich rotten kids love doing – cruising on yachts, splashing about the swimming pool, partying all night, the works. Throwing piss filled balloons on  Holi and morphing their college lecturer’s photos in class is something which they find routine and boring. Living life to the fullest, this gang of super rich kids are about to have to shock of their lives. One night, when all of the them are high on stolen bottles of cough syrup, they overrun two unknowns riding a scooter and kill them under their snazzy hummer. They get caught, but the corrupt cop asks them for 25 lakh to keep his mouth shut. So that’s the story: do they get the 25 khokas, or do they end up in jail?

Trying to do the same thing as a friend of one of them did, they decide to kidnap one of their own and demand a ransom of 25 with five zeroes. That’s ok, but they didn’t expect the dad to involve the police. Being the daughter of a rich dude, her ‘kidnapped’ news spread like wildfire, and since her friends were actually the ones who had ‘kidnapped’ her, they were with her… so the world assumed that they were kidnapped as well.

id="attachment_4953" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 485px"> href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/shaitan-movie-review.jpg"> class="size-full wp-image-4953" title="shaitan movie review" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/shaitan-movie-review.jpg" alt="shaitan movie review Movie Review: Shaitan" width="475" height="313" /> class="wp-caption-text">The crew

So here’s the thing: as the level of craziness rises with which they try to hide and carry on with their plan, they slowly start losing their sanity. Differences arise in a direct relationship to the level of hype this case gets. They begin fighting amongst themselves, until insanity drives them to a point of no-more-control-over-myself.

Amidst all this, Kalki Koechlin [Amy], the girl supposedly kidnapped, can’t let go of her 12-year-dead mother. She gets high on drugs, and keeps falling into flashbacks. So whilst the rest of the gang is going mad over differences, Amy is going mad over her dead mother.

The cop hired to solve this case, played by Rajeev Khandelwal, is determined to set things right. But the task is not as easy… because who is the kidnapper exactly? No one knows but the kidnappers themselves. As time goes on, the level of seriousness goes up, the level of madness hits an all-time high, and the shaitan in each gets naughtier [not at all in a childish way!].

Final Conclusion

What sets Shaitan apart from others? It’s the style. The way the visuals have been shot is actually brilliant. Made on a modest budget, the stunning visuals makes it seem as if the movie has been splurged on by the producers. Many more have tried this Zack Snyder-type slow-motions a lot, but they haven’t got a real situation to back up their stories of why they used this effect. But here, what with the great voice-overs, what with the getting high and all, what with the great camera work, a cool story, decent performances and smooth direction. The only thing lacking is a tight script and and the editing. The second half of the film drags on and one knows what will happen, wishing that it happened sooner.

We give it a 3 on 5.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

I have to begin this movie review of Zindagi na Milegi Dobara by saying that though it was a very enjoyable film, and perhaps accurately described as India’s first fully fledged road movie, it is not quite Dil Chahta Hai. Though comparisons are odious, in this case they are inevitable and Zindagi falls that little bit short of DCH, which was undeniably a cult film.

As with DCH, Zindagi na Milegi Dobara directed by Zoya Akhtar and penned by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti follows the trials and tribulations of three friends, and the evolution that their relationships go through. Farhan Akhtar, the thinking woman woman’s crumpet plays the irreverent Imraan, the lighthearted funster on the surface but a poet with his own issues under the surface. Hrithik Roshan, (pretty much any woman’s crumpet and looking rather awesome in the film I am bound to admit) plays the work obsessed stock broker Arjun. Abhay Deol plays the gentle, steadfast Kabir who acts as the glue in this three way relationship and unresolved conflicts between the other two. Kabir is also contending with a in impending marriage to Natasha (Kalki Koechelin) that he isn’t at all sure of.

href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/07/Zindaginamilegidobara.jpg"> class="alignright size-full wp-image-5014" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/07/Zindaginamilegidobara.jpg" alt="Zindaginamilegidobara Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review" width="332" height="480" title="Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review" />Story of Zindagi na Milegi Dobara

A pact made earlier between the friends meant that they three set out on a trip Spain where each one gets to indulge in an adventure sport of their own choice and the other two are to join in. Kabir picks deep sea diving, Arjun picks sky diving with a parachute, and Imraan picks running with the bulls. The beautiful Spanish countryside and cities of Costa Brava, Seville and Pamplona offer a travelogue like experience to the viewer.

The journey, which is supposed to be an extended bachelor jaunt for the three friends before Kabir gets married is a journey that is both literal as well as of the emotional kind. It starts off with some tension between the uptight Arjun and the irreverent Imraan who proceed to work out some issues from their past after Imraan flings Arjun’s constantly ringing phone out of the car window.

The three meet diving instructor Laila (Katrina Kaif), who has rather a big impact on Arjun as she literally holds his hand through the deep sea diving expedition; a difficult experience for him since he cannot swim. She opens up a whole new way of thinking for him and makes true her own prediction for him – “Tumhari Zindagi badalne wali hai”.

There is the subplot of Imraan’s real father, an artist who abandoned his mother before his birth, who is living in Spain and whom Imraan is both eager and reluctant to meet. The other relationship that runs like a thread through the film is the difficult one between the possessive, insecure Natasha and the conflicted Kabir.

Plus Points of Zindagi na Milegi Dobara

The characters are greatly likeable, well etched and identifiable and played with great élan by all the actors.  The script is amusing and enjoyable and immediately strikes a chord with the urban educated with several genuinely funny moments (such as when the three recall their teacher who used to ask the ‘bwaays’ if they were ‘the man-tally challenged’).

The music is also very enjoyable and some very apt use of rousing Spanish rhythms has been made by the hugely talented trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy – you find yourself nodding your head in time with more than one foot tapping number.

The visuals are great and the movie is a visual delight. For DCH fans (such as me) many of the camera angles recall Aamir, Akshaye and Saif silhouettes irresistibly to mind.

The resolutions in the end and the metamorphosis that more than one of the characters undergoes in the movie; as well as the restoration of friendship is also reminiscent of DCH, and are altogether satisfactory.

The Negatives of Zindagi na Milegi Dobara

The emotional angles of the film are a bit labored in parts, with a bit too much emphasis on the angst, which tends to make the pace of the film lag in parts.   The movie is perhaps 15 minutes too long and could have benefited hugely from a bit more crispness and a slight abbreviation in the script. Also the ending is a little pat, but this is not really a negative; things fall into place rather satisfactorily in the end. I also thought that certain moments in the film could have been exploited for some more humour.

Then there are the necessarily brief roles of Deepti Naval and Naseeruddin Shah in the film – this is not so much a complaint because it couldn’t have been any other way; it’s just that one always wishes to see more of these marvellous actors at any time.

Most movie reviews of Zindagi na Milegi Dobara have given the film 3.5 and I more or less agree – a fun, enjoyable film with appropriate bits of angst and conflict; Oh! And Hrithik Roshan has never looked better and Abahy Deol was as likeable as he was in Honeymoon Travels Ltd.; Farhan Akhtar as terrific as he was in his defining film Rock On.

Delhi Belly – Movie Review

Monday, July 18th, 2011

This is one of those surprising films that lives up to the rel="nofollow" href="../top-6-reasons-to-look-forward-to-delhi-belly/">hype and high expectations that people had from it – Delhi Belly is funny, outrageous, uproarious, unapologetic, crude, vulgar, true to life; it breaks new ground in Bollywood and is whole lot beside. This Delhi Belly movie review may be more than a week late, but it is not too late for you to catch the film in the theatres, which I highly recommends.

Before weighing in with this film review of Delhi Belly, there are two things to consider – if one finds films such as Welcome, Thank You, Sorry (sorry, is that not a film yet?), Double Dhamaal and Ready funny, then one will wonder where and when to laugh while watching Delhi Belly – at several points when my friend and I were falling about with laughter there was dead silence from other parts of the theater. Also if you find expletives and shit (there! I said the word!) offensive, if you find it repulsive to hear the scatological processes of others on screen, don’t watch the film; it is not for the lily-livered or the faint of heart.

The Story of Delhi Belly

href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/07/416px-Delhi_belly_poster.jpg"> class="alignright size-full wp-image-4982" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/07/416px-Delhi_belly_poster.jpg" alt="416px Delhi belly poster Delhi Belly – Movie Review" width="416" height="599" title="Delhi Belly – Movie Review" />The story of the film consists of three guys who are roommates in a particularly seedy building of Delhi living a life with only a passing resemblance to civilization, and who get embroiled with the Delhi underworld due to a sequence of strange events. The three guys are Tashi (Imran Khan) the journalist who wants to be covering serious stories but is stuck interviewing vapid pop stars, Nitin (Kunal Roy Kapur) photo journalist and part time blackmailer, and Arup (Vir Das) ad executive, the twin banes of whose life are a callous girlfriend and an idiotic boss.

The trouble starts when Nitin, who is beset with a stomach infection (a Delhi Belly, get the connection?) asks Arup to deliver a stool sample to the lab and another mysterious parcel from Tashi’s girlfriend (Shenaz Treasurywala playing an airhostess) to another address. Obviously the two get mixed up and the mysterious parcel which contains smuggled diamonds lands up in the lab.

On the other hand, the stool sample lands up with the smuggler goons who are more than a little surprised to find, well, shit instead of the diamonds they had been expecting. The underworld thug (a deliciously seedy looking Vijay Raaz) is not best pleased and proceeds to rough up the smuggler (a firang called Vladimir, don’t you know) and take the necessary steps to recover his diamonds and all manner of violent mayhem ensues.

The interesting subplots involve Tashi’s colleague Meneka (Poorna Jagannathan) and the man she is in the process of divorcing and Meneka’s chemistry with Tashi. Then there is the sleazy jeweler (Rajendra Sethi) and the good at heart landlord (Paresh Ganatra) who has the unfortunate predilection for fat prostitutes who give the story more points of interest.

The Plus Points of Delhi Belly

The humour in the film is not by force – it may be crude, vulgar and may even put you off your movie popcorn for a considerable length of time; but it is very much flows naturally from the story (pun unintended) and is truly and uproariously funny. The foul mouthed characters are thoroughly believable and realistic. And though this is a genre of comedy hitherto unexplored in India, there is no doubt that this is an Indian film in every sense of the word; there are no discernible cringe-worthy copycat moments.

The cast is superb, the acting subtle or beautifully over the top as required, the pace of the film never lags, it is gripping and there isn’t a dull moment in the film. This is an adult film and you cannot, repeat cannot take children to watch it.

The Minus Point of Delhi Belly

My only regret, as I set out my thoughts in this Delhi Belly movie review, is that I wish that I could have seen the English version of the film –clearly the Hindi version is the dubbed version and the lip synch is a little dodgy.  I end with the wish that this film does really well and gives other filmmakers the courage to venture into the uncharted territory where this film has so boldly gone. As of now I await the DVD release of the film.

Hindi Movie Releases this Weekend-Friday 17 June

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Summer is a good time for Bollywood – the kids have school and college holidays, people seek out the cool environs of movie theatres and malls to while away the time and there are so many Hindi movie releases for this Friday, 17 June that the audiences have it made.

Let’s take a look at all the Hindi film releases for this weekend in June –

href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/Alwayskabhikabhi.jpg"> class="alignright size-full wp-image-4935" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/Alwayskabhikabhi.jpg" alt="Alwayskabhikabhi Hindi Movie Releases this Weekend Friday 17 June " width="200" height="300" title="Hindi Movie Releases this Weekend Friday 17 June " />Always Kabhi Kabhi – You can’t have missed the TV promo of this film; obviously a teen romcom. The film is about the lives and loves of the bright young students at a school called St Marks. The film stars   Ali Fazal (remember the boy Jay Lobo who kills himself in 3 Idiots?) as Sameer Khanna, who is the archetypal cool dude, Giselli Monteiro (remember the Punjabi kudi in Love Aaj Kal?) as Aishwarya Dhawan the pretty girl who wants to be more than a pretty face,  Zoa Morani as Nandini the wild one,  Satyajeet Dubey as Tariq Naqvi, the school topper Satish Shah and Lilette Dubey among others.

Bheja fry 2 – For any one who saw and loved that mad caper the original Bheja Fry, this one of the Friday Hindi movie releases is bound to be of great interest. This edition also includes the old characters of the importunate Bharat Bhushan played by Vinay Pathak and Kay Kay Menon as Ajit Talwar. In addition there aer Minissha Lamba as Ranjini, Amole Gupte as Raghu Burman, Suresh Menon as  M T Shekharan and Rahul Vohra as Kapoor. This time around the tax inspector Bharat Bhushan enters a game show hoping to win and make his own music album. What he does win is a holiday on a cruise ship where he meets Kay Kay’s character who is on the run from the income tax authorities. After a bunch of mistaken identity episodes, the two men land up on a desert island.

href="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/400px-Bhindi-bazaar-inc.jpg"> class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-4936" src="http://www.bollykings.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/06/400px-Bhindi-bazaar-inc-200x300.jpg" alt="400px Bhindi bazaar inc 200x300 Hindi Movie Releases this Weekend Friday 17 June " width="200" height="300" title="Hindi Movie Releases this Weekend Friday 17 June " />Bhindi Bazaar Inc., another of this weekend’s Hindi movie releases, is a look at the Mumbai’s dark underbelly (yes yet again). The main characters are Shroff (Kay Kay Menon) and Darzi (Gautam Sharma) who each try to outdo each other in a vicious game where people are mere pawns to be disposed of at will. There is also a small time pickpocket Fateh (Prashant Narayanan) who aspires to the position of the local don or Mamu. The movie also features Deepti Naval and Pawan Malhotra as Mamu and his wife.  The film set and shot in the crowded by lanes of Mumbai’s infamous Bhindi Bazaar also features an item number by Caterina Lopez.

Bin Bulaye Baarati, another of this weekend’s Hindi movie releases, stars Aftab Shivdasani, Nisha Kothari, Om Puri, Mallika Sherawat, Rajpal Yadav, Gulshan Grover and Mukesh Tiwari. The story is about baddies who meet at a casino to strike a deal involving diamonds. The fortune of the baddies is highjacked by AD and Shreya (Shivdasani and Kothari) and on the run the run into other mad cap characters who are also on the run and all manner of mayhem ensues.

Cycle Kick – is a story about modest means and lofty dreams. The film stars K.P. Nishan Nanaiah, Sunny Hinduja, Girija Oak, Ishita Sharma, Dwij Yadav, Tom Alter, Sameer Kochhar and is about two village boys, Ramu (Nishan) and his younger brother Deva (Dwij Yadav). One day they find a beaten up cycle which changes their lives. The fix the bike but it gets stolen. The cycle ownership will be decided by a football match, who will win?

So these are the main Hindi Movie Releases for this Friday, 17 June for you to choose from. There appears to be a lot of variety to choose from; one wonders what fate awaits these films at the box office.
